Advanced Eye Examinations

Optos Ultrawide Field Fundus Imaging

The inspection of the retina permits the optometrist to detect and diagnose eye disease. Not too long ago and still in many clinics, a special torch or ophthalmoscope was used to conduct this function. Whilst useful, it has limitations. The optometrist must get very close to the patient’s eye and the view is analogous to looking through a peep hole. The view is often obscured by media, light reflections, and opacities. Some clinics now have a standard fundus camera, which permits a 45-degree view of the retina- but this doesn’t tell the full story.

State-of-the-art technology at Tynedale Eye Clinic means that we can now view up to 200 degrees (82%) of the retina in a non-invasive and single scan using lasers.

This exceptional range allows the Optometrist to see disease, which often begins in the peripheral retina before affecting central central vision- particularly in cardiovascular conditions, retinal detachments and degenerative conditions that Myopic (short sighted) people are more at risk of.

We are also able to perform autofluorescence scans to check cell function and health without using injected dyes.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Whilst the wide field scan allows us to see the full extent of change to the outer surface of the retina, disease normally starts in the underlying layers. The retina is like a multi layered sandwich or cake. OCT is a non-invasive 3D scan that allow the Optometrist to see a cross section of the retina to be able to detect and predict changes happening in layers below the surface.

By being able to map and measure the thickness of nerve fibres, the optometrist can use AI technology to compare this to a normative database for age, ethnicity and gender. This permits for early detection of disease and prediction of certain eye conditions such as glaucoma.

In our experience this is particularly important after any kind of ocular surgery such as cataract removal or where there has been a sudden change in vision noticed.

The Theatre Experience

Uniquely to our clinic, all findings, interpretations and concerns will be explained by projection on a theatre style screen.

Due to the extended time needed to perform and explain an enhanced eye exam we set aside 45 minutes for this. Communication is key. By explaining fully our findings we can co-manage your care efficiently and thoroughly.
